I just gave up trying to run mamece on my Jornada 548. I have followed all the installing instructions (got gx.dll in /Windows, 12MB free memory, etc...) and cannot even run the built in games. I've tried the small and big versions and all I got is a 5 seconds black screen before getting back the menu screen.

What do you mean by 'built in games'? Have you downloaded appropriate game ROM files and copied them in the ROMs folder?

I've downloaded some ROM files from mame.dk (alien.zip, auraila.zip & arkanoidu.zip among others) and put them into /MameCE/ROMS. Then, run MameCE and select Options->Show All Games and click on one of them. No way, all I get is the 5 seconds black screen again.

Any Idea?

If the game does not show up after you put the proper ROM in the Roms Folder (compressed-ie do not unzip it) then something is wrong or that game may not be supported or has problems. Try dkong, puckman or frogger first. If they run then you know the EMU is working correctly.
