Not a dumb question at all... but answered in a few places (like at the getting started website thats around).

Anyway, there are two programs. One called VPinball that simulates a pinball game. This handles the balls, the bumpers and lights. This allows people to build a table like the old old pinball construction set (that btw, I received as a christmas present when I was like 8 and it was brand spank'n new on the shelves. I loved it).

Now, VPinmame emulates the stuff under the table on many pinball machines. what flashes, scores, when to release a ball, ect.

So the combination is needed.

You actually only run VPinball and load a table that needs VPinmame. When you start the table, it will load VPinmame automatically.
