Iam a little confused with the available emus, i first downloaded the "pinmame 32" only to realise its not much good, then i got "visual pinball" and then "v pinmame" but iam a little confused when i go to play some games and it tells me i have got bad roms etc , some games are excellent notably "joker poker" and "black knight" but a lot of them are really shocking emulations. can somebody please tell me the easiest way to compile all this ????

First off, both Visual Pinball and VPinMAME are still betas. Both should be getting updates soon.
The ROMs issues will be fixed hopefully next release of VPinMAME, and may actually throw out this entire .dat issue, and just stick to the roms that are the actual pinball arcade roms.
What you mean by problem games? Some of these games, the roms just don't work, or the roms are not complete. (Been working on that the last few days, made some major progress)
