just did a fresh reinstall of windows me and it still won't work, whenever I try to get files from some sites, like windows update, avg's website, guru3d, etc, the download starts and then hangs instantly. on some sites the downloads work fine... I just don't get it

the internet connection is an old motorola cable modem

Just use WIN98SE. WindowsMe is a total piece of shit and everyone who isn't mentally incapacitated knows this. You'd have better luck running MacOS on a PC than running and enjoying WinMe. ;)

Trust me, I'm the first in line saying that me in shit, it's just some woman's comp I was trying to fix.

It wouldn't download from most website, but, it worked flawlessly with ftp sites. They called their ISP, so the cable company came in and checked everything, changed the modem, it wouldn't do no good. The tech said the problem is probably win me... so they finally agreed to let me install windows XP (in english, even though they speak only a few words). Guess what, still the same goddamn problem.

Yesterday, I told them to let me go back home take a network card and try it, they already busted one, so why not another? After all, the cable modem isn't shielded from electric discharges, things like lightning you know. But still, why would it download from ftp sites without problems?! What the hell, it was the last thing to try before trying the comp here with my dsl connection.

You should have seen my face, it fucking worked, I don't know why but it downloaded from ftp AND websites. Fucking network card, took half an hour to get another one from the computer store (still on warranty), now it works like a charm, plus it has windows xp installed, oh yeah.

They had winme installed for 3-4 years already, tons of shit installed, problems all the time, finally it's all over, I can sleep now!

That's just how Windows ME works. In fact I'm surprised XP and 2000 and 98SE and 98 and 95 don't do the same things...

Have you checked the "File Types" thing in My Computer? It specifies what IE should do with the files, download them or open them in an app...

maybe it depends on the file type

Holy shit, that's fucked up. Sorry about that. I wonder if the problem was the configuration? My old DSL modem wouldn't work properly unless you specifically set the network card to 10mb/sec Full Duplex instead of autodetect... My brother also had a fucked up network card that would disconnect from the network every 15 seconds, only with his motherboard (ASUS A7V), but any other network card worked fine in the same slot with the same cable...
