SubjectAny way to "upgrade" MIDI instruments? new Reply to this message

This is a dumb question, no doubt, but is there any way to "improve" the quality of MIDI instruments? They always sound so fake and computery. Is there a way to make them sound more like real violins, timpani, pianos, etc.? Or do all MIDI playbacks sound the same? Would it entail a new sound card? I don't think there's anything "wrong" with my sound card, insofar as it being unable to effectively score music; it doesn't sound distorted, but I thought maybe there was a way to get it to sound more like a real orchestra. I dunno. Pipe dream?

Any way to improve MIDI instruments?

Replace the original samples. This varies on your sound card. With Live and Audigy cards you can load up SoundFonts.

Other than that, you just need a high quality MIDI that tries to reproduce the reverb and other effects in the right places.

You could use WinGroove to play your MIDIs, it uses its own sound library rather than the one of your sound card/operating system.

If I had the extra cash to blow I'd buy one of these. Sometimes I like to check out MIDI music but it never sounds really awesome. I've heard some MP3s people have made using an SC-88 and as long as the MIDI was made to take advantage of the features then this thing will sound sweet.
