SubjectWacky computer monitor stuff... Reply to this message

Hey guys, I'm not sure what the go is with my monitor. Most likely it’s on the way out, but maybe you guys have another idea. Anywho, the story...

The other day I turned my computer on and it was working fine. Soon after loading into Win2000 I noticed on my monitor that a small transparent white line spanning horizontally across the bottom of the screen was moving up and down a bit. I thought it was a tad weird but thought nothing of it, used it for a few hours and shut it down as usual before going to sleep.

The next day I booted my computer up again and soon after loading the screen began to shrink and expand (only a very tiny bit), which made it look a little shaky, and was kind of distracting when trying to work. Since then, turning the computer on and waiting a little while results in a slightly jumpy screen with a few flickering lines through it here and there.

I have tried several things, including mucking with the refresh rates, colour, resolution and even the monitor controls. It doesn't seem to affect it.

However, I have noticed that:
--If I turn the computer on for a while in the morning, turn it off, and then come back in the afternoon it works as normal...
--By shutting down the computer and then taking the lead out of the back of my video card and plugging it back in seems to make the monitor work as normal, until turning it off and coming back the next day... then the problem returns...

Just wondering if what you guys think. Is it the monitor as I suspect, or maybe some interference (though nothing on my computer has changed, nor has it been moved since this started happening), or could it even be my video card?

I doubt it's the monitor cable.

Still, the best thing to do is troubleshoot. If you have another computer, switch monitors with it. That should isolate it to either card or monitor/cable. If it's monitor/cable, get a new cable and check it out. If the problem persists with another monitor on your card, clearly it's the card.

If none of that is possible, suck it up and wait for it to die. There really is no other way. You could try running some intensive benchmarking on the card trying to get it to fold, but that might not work. Another quick test is to pull the card, clean it gently, and make sure it's seated properly.

I'd put my money on the monitor given the info you've provided.

If you already tried degauss, it probably is dying.

:/ Sounds like it might be dying.

Yeah, there's a chance it could be some parts on your video card associated with the RAMDAC (converts the video card's signal to output to your monitor) might be dodgy, and are acting up after a while? But I don't know how you'd detect or fix that so easily. You could always try it on another monitor, or try something else on the monitor you have now.
