SubjectFried mobo, please help... Reply to this message

Without going into great detail, one of my 2 PC's got fried yesterday. It was my own fault, I basically attached a ribbon cable the wrong way around, adding a 2nd CD drive without thinking, and at powerup I smelled an odd smell, the PC shut totally off, and now the PC now longer powers up. No beeps. Nothing.

I tested the components I could. The HD and videocard are OK. And the power supply seems OK because I plugged it into an old mobo I had in the closet and a power diode on the mobo lit up. So it's giving out power.

So I'm pretty sure it's just the mobo that was fried.

QUESTION: Is it very likely the CPU and RAM on the fried mobo are also fried now?

If so I'll just upgrade this box.

I doubt it, there should be a lot of voltage regulators in place to make sure shit like that doesn't happen. Probably a few traces/components on the mobo are fried and that's all... It'd be worth testing the CPU/RAM if you can.
