I'm thinking about buying this: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=27-152-035&DEPA=0

I'd like it so I can back-up all of my shit on to DVDs(RWs preferably so I can update them). My main question is, what in the fuck is the difference between DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R, DVD-RW?

Am tired to hear that what is you point. mine its very clear sun. shit uuuuuuuuppppppppp - Dany

First things first, I think you know the difference between dvd-r and dvd-rw, rw is rewritable. Next, about that DL dvd, it's a dual layer dvd. A single layer dvd can hold up to 4.38gb of data, dual layer, well guess what, about the double, but the burning speed is much, much slower (most drives are 2.4x on DL) and the media is pretty expensive.

Now let's check the + and - differences. It's simply 2 different standards that companies came up with, there wasn't really a consensus so 2 standards were produced. Nowadays, most hardware relaying on dvd support both format quite well, but not so long ago the - format seemed to be the one most compatible. However, some devices only read + media. So just check out your dvd player manual for example if you intend to burn movie dvds. Every burner now supports both standards perfectly, but I'd still go with - if I had a choice. Oh and dvd-r has 8mb more than +r ;)

I only buy dvd-r, except for my dvd+rw, we don't have dvd-rw over here, but they're slower than dvd+rw anyway.

The main difference between + and - format is that dvd+ can be read without closing session when they are burned in multisession mode, dvd- can't.
