I had 98 and XP installed on separate partitions of my HDD. recently I formatted the partition with 98 on it and reinstalled 98. Now the dual boot option would no longer come up, even though XP is still installed on the other partition. How do I get the dual boot option back?

When you install Windows '98 it replaces the bootloader in the MBR with it's own, thus the NT bootloader (which offers the dual boot option) is no longer loading. Using the fixmbr command in the recovery console (boot the XP CD and select recovery console) should restore the NT bootloader.

Thought i'd ask a question i was wondering about recently since it's been brought up here...

I have Xp installed (one partition only). I was thinking of having a duel boot Xp/w98, but i'm aware that you need to install w98 first?.

So, is it possible to install w98 on the same partition (in another directory; w98 or something) and then use the fixmbr you just mentioned?

Thanks.

same partition = bad because no matter what, the install will hijack the "program files" directory which just makes everything a plain mess, trust me ;-)

Found the fixmbr command, but which parameter do I have to input to make it work? I got 98 installed on C: and XP on F:

I have win98 and XP installed on the same partition and have no problems at all. I installed XP first and then I installed win98. XP has the folder 'windows' and windows 98 has 'win98'
