Anyone else having issues with dual core procs? I got one and I'm having problems with games crashing all the time. I downloaded AMDs dual core optimizer and that fixed the crazy speed problems, but things are still crashing. Also, I've had it happen where it just freezes up for about 8 seconds and then I can keep playing.

I'm about to just sell it and go back to single core.

This AMD64 X2 4200+ runs as solid as a rock with either linux or windows.

Did you start out with a clean install?

With the stalling and then going again it almost sound like there is some diseaseware running in the background.

Can you give more hardware and software details.

I didn't do a clean install and would rather not. It's an X2 4200+. Abit KN8. 7800GT. Civ4 Warlords crashes constantly. NFSU2 crashed constantly. Star Wars KOTOR crashed once and stalled once so far. Planescape Torment was having weird issues such as stalling that I don't recall having when the system was single core. Oblivion runs fine, but it's multi-threaded. Seems like anything that isn't gets limited to one core, so really my old 3200+ single core would be more effective in those instances. Everything other than games though run fine.

e; Some more KOTOR crashes, and also a BSOD that referenced "HCF_MSFT".

I'm wondering if you have a big enough power supply.
Lack of power will produce symptoms similar to those you are experiencing and then run fine when not doing graphics intensive tasks. No 20pin to 24pin adapters and plenty of 12v. See if you can beg or borrow another PS to try.

You are correct about most games only using one core, but this is changing supposedly as the single cores are becoming rare on all but entry level boxes.

HCF_MSFT.sys is a Windows built-in driver for a Conexant softmodem, I have heard of rumors of it, but not seem it used to conceal malware, to be safe give it a check over.

I think the power supply is ok. 430 watt Enermax with plenty of amps. And the thing is, I can just leave KOTOR on the menu screen and alt-tab out and it will eventually crash. And the most graphics intensive game I have, Oblivion, generally runs fine.

Interesting. I'll use Microsoft's malware app and see if it can find anything. I guess I have two other ways to go; clean install or try a different processor.

e; Microsoft's app didn't find anything, although I don't know how effective it is.
