I'm wondering if you have a big enough power supply.
Lack of power will produce symptoms similar to those you are experiencing and then run fine when not doing graphics intensive tasks. No 20pin to 24pin adapters and plenty of 12v. See if you can beg or borrow another PS to try.

You are correct about most games only using one core, but this is changing supposedly as the single cores are becoming rare on all but entry level boxes.

HCF_MSFT.sys is a Windows built-in driver for a Conexant softmodem, I have heard of rumors of it, but not seem it used to conceal malware, to be safe give it a check over.
