SubjectOut Run rom naming help needed Reply to this message

Ok all you Sega gurus :) I'm trying to convert my suicided Turbo Out Run back to Out Run (the Turbo was an upgrade kit)
I have grabbed a few sets of OR roms and the only ones I cannot use are the versions with 128k (1mbit) graphics roms. I do have the roms for use with Thierry's system 16 emu and it apparently has the correct size graphic roms but the naming doesn't match the real board. Therefore, I have no idea which rom would go in which socket! Funny thing is all the other roms are correctly named, just the graphics are not. Would anyone know how to sort them into the correct naming? TIA!

I don't have an answer to your question, but seeing as I have the same question and nobody has replied to you yet, maybe this may help bump the thread up again.

In basic terms, to the best of my knowledge, nobody has yet found a non suicide battery turbo out run board set nor has anyone yet "decrypted" the Turbo Out Run rom set on the suicide board set. (although if you look at Turbo Out Run's listing on the system 16 web site, it shows emulated pics of the game?) So...has it been done yet? If so, which rom set on the net would contain the 4? new "unencrypted" eproms needed to repair the board?

Answer to this aside, in the meantime, owners of eprom burners and dead Turbo Out Run boards (such as myself) would like to know just which roms at which locations on the board need to be replaced (as well as the obvious swap of the F suicide chip with a 68,000) in order to convert the "worthless" dead Turbo Out Run BACK to a USEFULL Out Run. Can someone be so kind to help us with this?

Also the rom sets for Out Run on the net are complete confusion with dozens of numbers and such that make no sense? PLEASE just tell us which physical eproms / roms need to be removed from which positions on the board, as well as which rom files correspond to which size eprom chips and to which locations on the board. Please help! Thanks!

Alright well I have made some progress on my own and I will post my findings here to help those interested and also to keep this going until we resolve it.

Alright so the bottom board of an original Out Run has 6 EPROMS and 8 ROMS. It appears as though both original and Turbo Out Run share these same 14 rom images? So we will ignore the bottom deck of the board for this procedure.

Now, the top board of an original Out Run contains 17 EPROMS. (9 are 256's) (8 are 512's) So on a "battery dead" Turbo Out Run board, it appears as though ALL 17 of these EPROMS would need to be populated and of course the FD encryption processor swapped with a standard Motorolla 68,000 processor.

A Turbo Out Run top board contains 9 EPROMS and 10 ROMS. That makes 19 chips versus the 17 from regular Out Run. Among the EPROMS are the two extra 512's and one of the 256's is swapped with a 512 as well. The ROMS I will assume to be of the same values.

Alright so I have carefully looked over the MAME rom set for Out Run and have determined that the reason it has so many damn files is because among the files are the different revisions of rom sets (EPR vs. OPR) and (a vs. b) etc. As well as all those rom files for those little tiny IC's which we need not worry about for this project.

Alright so then turns out that (at least on paper and in theory) re-converting a Turbo Out Run back to Out Run is as simple as removing 20 chips (19 roms and 1 processor), and then placing 18 chips (17 roms and 1 processor) on the board. I will physically try this as soon as I have the chance and report my findings here so we can confirm this.

Lastly, it looks as though only 4 ROMS are "encrypted" by the FD suicide processor, so in theory replacing those 4 chips as well as the FD processor would "repair" a battery dead Turbo Out Run. Only thing is, one would need to have the 4 new and "unencrypted" rom files to program those new eprom chips with. This brings us to our LAST and KEY question of this thread...

So if EMULATED pics for turbo out run appear next to turbo out run in it's listing on system16.com then obviously SOMEBODY has the 4 "corrected" files!? The dead battery society does NOT have these files however on their site? So does one assume that these 4 files can be found in the Turbo Out Run rom set? A simple yes or no would suffice I guess. Because if they do, then the dead battery society is simply out dated and this problem is no more.

Alright well I will report my findings later on.
Regards.

>I have decrypted TURBO OUT RUN rom images. I paid $30 for them so that I could get my 2 boards running. I'd be happy to share the images for $10 so you can share the expense. The necessary ROMS are 27512's, chip #'s epr12512, epr12513, epr12514 & epr12515. Burn the images & replace the security processor with a standard 68000 processor & boom....you're driving again. The images are not available from MAME sites. The MAME emulation of TURBO OUT RUN works with the encrypted ROMS by emulating the RAM decryption portion of the FD1094 security processor. Email me at pinballwiley@sbcglobal.net if you'd like to acquire the decrypted ROM images. Mike
