Subject"Space Harrier" for Sega 32X new Reply to this message

Hey, I just need someone to educate me on something really quickly, because I know absolutely nothing about the Sega 32X. I recently found out that one of my favorite games of all time, "Space Harrier," has a version for the Sega 32X, so obviously I want to find out about this system right quick.

Thing is, Sega's made so many video game consoles over the years that have gone about as quickly as they've come, which is one reason I'm not to familiar with this system (plus, for all my American ass knows, the 32X may like the Japanese name for the Saturn or something I've already heard of). Does the 32X have any other names?

But the main thing I want to know is: has this console been emulated? Or if not, why, and is someone working on it?? Because obviously I'd like to try this game, but I don't want to hold my breath on something that isn't likely to happen, soon or at all.

Its codename under development was "Mars".

Sega Mars - 32X code name
Sega Neptune - 32X\Genesis Hybrid
Sega Jupiter - Cartridge version of Saturn
Sega Saturn - Sega Saturn

I heard somewhere though that the Sega 32X was a different name for the Sega CD... is this true??

And, judging by what you said Stiletto, would that mean that the 32X games would work both on the Mars and Jupiter?? And if that is the case, are there any Jupiter emulators?

The names "Mars" and "Jupiter" were never commercially used, this is very misleading, I would ignore those names.

A picture of the 32x box. The 32x was a addon system that pluged into the cart slot of the sega genesis. So a sega genesis is required. You can pick up 32x unit and 32x games for pocket change on ebay (seriously).

the 32X version is similar to Afterburner of 32X - less smooth raterate but otherwise identical to the arcade (could be cos on UK TV it's only 50hz = 50fps?)

anyway why not simply play the original arcade version? the 32X version needs a much more powerful PC to play it (32X emulators = GENS, XEGA, Retrodrive, AGES).

emulators for the arcade version include System16(!) and MAME (may be slightly odd in latest MAME).

Hell, I told the guy that list was of "development names", not names in commercial use. Damn it all...

Actually yes it does. Three names actually "Genesis 32X" for USA "MegaDrive 32X" for Europe, and "Super 32X" for Japan.

You getting confused with the CDX. The CDX was a Genesis/Sega CD como unit about the size of portable CD player. The CDX was called MultiMega for European and Japanese markets.

Jupiter and Neptune were only prototypes. Never produced.
And MARS was the 32X's protoype codename.

...the 32X version of "Space Harrier" is more or less the same game as the original arcade? Same characters, same levels, game gameplay, same graphics? (as in, the only difference by the sound of it is a slight upgrade in the technology?).

I don't proclaim to be a technological expert enough to know or care about the difference if this game is merely a faster-moving version of the original, or whatever. I just love the "Space Harrier" series, so if this technically isn't a full sequel, I just need to know so I don't have to worry about tracking it down.

it's a clone of the original arcade yes. in fact its frame rate is probably less than the arcade (judging by Afterburner 32X).

If you are looking for the sequel then that's called Space Harrier II and came out on Atari ST, Amiga, Megadrive, arcade (Megadrive version in Megaplay), Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, C64...

Personally I thought that the music on Space Harrier II was ace (especially Spectrum version strangely enough).

The 32X version is a straight port. There are no new levels/characters/musics/etc. You should just play the real thing in MAME 0.36 (newer versions will not work) or S16AE or whatever :)
