DGen
it's all just a little bit of history repeating...

Dave's e-mail address has changed to dave@dtmnt.com
(This page is now only at www.dtmnt.com) DGen is a free Genesis/Megadrive emulator for Windows 95/98/2000 (and possibly NT) running under DirectX.
It has sound. Recommended computer is a Pentium-II.
DGen is open source, so you can download the source code and produce versions for other operating systems perhaps!

Speaking of which...
DGen/MacOS!
Richard Bannister and many others have been working hard to port DGen to MacOS and also have added a lot of code!
Questions specifically about the Mac version are probably best directed to them, since they know a lot more about Macs than I do.
New!:
DGen/Linux!!!
This version is by Joe Groff, who has also added loads of code!! His version uses the Simple Directmedia Layer (SDL) library.
The BeOS version page is also linked from Joe's page.

DGen v1.14 - dgen114.zip for Windows, now with SRAM support and lots more (read what's new in dgen.txt), or DGen-DOS v1.04A - dgend104.zip (no sound)

Here is the v1.09 source dgens109.zip.
Once again 1.09 is the same as 1.08, and is only to distinguish the source.
The general idea is that, now that you have Musashi 68k emu and ZZ80 included, in theory anyone who knows what they are doing can compile it on any system, (but it will be slow until you recode crtical bits in assembler). As well as the DOS port and the Windows port of DGen there's a really simple 'dgenr' program in there which just dumps a screenshot (i.e. not playable), and I've got that running on Linux and DOS. It would be really useful (e-mail me) to know if it can be compiled and run under Solaris, N64, PSX, Amiga or anything else since there may be endian problems buried in there. And if it works... well you've got no excuse for not porting to the above systems have you!

DGen now has interlace mode!
DGen currently (May '99) is the only Genesis emulator with interlace mode support.
That doesn't mean it is, or will be the best Genesis emulator, it just means that DGen is the only Genesis emulator with interlace mode support. Pretty clear really.

The image to the right is a stretched version (made by resizing the DGen window). By eliminating the distortion, Sonic 2 may actually be better than the original!

Here is the original with its distorted image:
