  • Zzap!64 issue 107, March 2002! - After 8 years, a new issue of Zzap!64 (C64 magazine) has been released! There are 2 versions available, one lowres (4.xMB) and one hi-res (30.xMB). I'm currently downloading this issue, so I can't say too much about it right now. Please have your download managers at the ready ;) Thanks to everyone who mailed. - atila

  • XMMS-SID 0.7.3 - XMMS-SID is an XMMS plugin which provides support for playing the so-called "SID tunes". For the actual playing, XMMS-SID uses the libsidplay SID-chip/6502 emulator engine. It features a file-info window, STIL-database support, and good configurability. Changes: Support for the latest libsidplay (a fix for the "undefined symbol" problem that prevented XMMS-SID from working). License: GPL. - chris

  • DCStella 0.2b - DCStella is the port of the Stella Atari 2600 VCS Emulator to the Sega Dreamcast gaming console. It uses the original, unchanged Stella sources which have to be downloaded seperately. Changes: A new option was added in the pause menu that lets you know a little bit more about the cartridge. You are now able to build a one ROM file version that autostarts that ROM. License: Free for non-commercial use - chris

  • Arcade Flyers - 35 new "old" flyers have been added to the database at ArcadeFlyers.com. - atila

  • DreamSNES 0.9.6 Released - They've re-enabled the CPU optimisations they forgot in the Valentines Day release, so according to Sonikku (who also gave me the news), most games are now full-speed or close to it. Since I have no DC at work, I can't test it here. Unfortunately. You can download DreamSNES 0.9.6 here. - atila

  • MAME.DK - As you probably noticed, the rom downloads have disappeared at MAME.DK. A certain copyright holder is enforcing their rights and as such, downloads at MAME.DK have been disabled. They will continue to provide the database services at MAME.DK, as well as the supporting files (emulator mirror, screenshots, artwork, samples etc.) and they will consider adding new "features" to the system, when the need arises.

I'd like to thank MAME.DK for providing everyone a pretty damn cool service, you've been an amazing rom resource. - atila

  • mame.dk offline for now - mame.dk, the popular mame download site appears to have disabled ROM downloads for the time being. Download links have been removed, and manually supplying a "rom" download link returns a "Downloading closed" response. As a donating member, I can confirm this is happening for everyone, not just anonymous users. If you are looking for ROMS, an excellent alternative is USENET. Get a binary-oriented newsreader, configure it for your ISP's news server (or purchase an account on a 3rd party service), and check out alt.binaries.emulators.misc. MAME roms get posted on a regular basis. Using alternative sources helps take some of the load off mame.dk's servers, allowing them to "be there" when you are looking for an elusive game down the road. - metallik

  • Upcoming MAME roms - Looks like our resident ROM master, ZyClone, has updated his site with possible needed ROMs for the next version of MAME. - atila

  • MAME WIP - Another Psikyo game added to the new MAME driver by Haze. Check out screenshots at the MAME Status Page. - chris

  • MyMiggy 0.9 - UAE is a superb piece of software but perhaps a little hard to configure for the newbie or someone who wants to see some action fast. MyMiggy aims to provide a complete, functional user interface to UAE. Configurations are automatically loaded and saved; it comes already with some sane options that should allow fairly fast and painless configuration and usability. License: GPL. - chris

  • MAMECAT 0.44 beta 24 - MAMECAT stands for M.A.M.E. Catalog/Launcher. It consists of three programs: qmamecat, an X11/Qt based GUI and the main application; qmsetup, a startup setup wizard for qmamecat; and catgen, a simple catalog generator. qmsetup and catgen are started on demand by qmamecat. Changes: From now on, Qt 3.0.0 or above is required. The settings dialog was redesigned via Qt's GUI designer. The old font-specification method has been replaced with Qt's way of handling fonts. The new settings dialog makes it easy to reconfigure your fonts. Eight different GUI-styles are now supported. The ROM status parser is now less CPU-intensive and generally more reliable. The search-widget is now a combo box. Any changes to the window layout are now recognized. qmamecat will ask you to save the layout, if applicable. License: GPL. - chris

  • Afternoon Stalker 1.0 - Afternoon Stalker is a clone of the 1981 Intellivision game Night Stalker. The player is in a two-dimensional maze. The player is attacked by robots that shoot at it and that it must shoot down. Changes: The representation of the background has changed and the wall have rounded corners. License: GPL. - chris

  • VICE 1.8 - VICE is a Versatile Commodore Emulator, i.e. a program that runs on a Unix, MS-DOS/Win95/NT or RiscOS machine and executes programs intended for the old 8-bit Commodore computers. The current version emulates the C64, the C128 (80 column screen is included now), the VIC20, all the PET models (except the SuperPET 9000, which is out of line anyway) and the CBM-II (aka C610). Changes: The new emulated VIC-II palette is now the default. This release adds support for the Retro Replay cartridge, Fast PAL emulation, stereo support, and triple buffering DGA2 direct-into-fb-rendering support (root privileges needed). License: GPL. - chris

  • Vega Strike 0.2.0 - Vega Strike is an action space simulator designed to bring 3d space combat to a whole new level of graphics, gameplay, and customizability. Fun, playable missions were also added. License: GPL. - chris

  • SIDPLAY 1.36.51 - SIDPLAY emulates the Sound Interface Device chip (MOS 6581, commonly called SID) and the Micro Processor Unit (MOS 6510) of the Commodore 64 on your computer. It allows you to listen to more than 17000 famous C64 game and demonstration musics. Changes: This patchlevel re-enables support for backward compatible non-standard C++ header "strstream.h". This is needed on systems that don't have a more modern libstdc++ installed. Other users don't need this update. License: GPL. - chris

  • EmuWizard 0.80 - EmuWizard is a multi-emulator frontend for Windows, designed by Daniel Noguerol with arcade cabinet users in mind, but anyone can enjoy it. It's EXTREMELY customizable and skinnable too. New this release:

-Added enhanced support for emulators other than MAME.
-Added auto-creation of ROM lists for emulators (although manual game entries are still available).
-Now supports filtering for other emulators using the "Good" ROM naming convention.
-Added default images for each emulator and image type.
-Added supports for ROM file extensions other than .zip.
-Added support for .JPG images (as well as .PNG)
    -Improved command-line creation.
-And of course, miscellaneous bug fixes :).
    (Thanks Justin W.) - prophet

  • Emulaxian 0.51 - Peter Vogels released a new version of his advanced, animated 3D arcade emulation frontend, Emulaxian! He also points out a fast PC is needed for Emulaxian. New stuff follows:

    - A Virtual 3d "Pinball" arcade! (screenshot) besides the "normal" 3d arcade (screenshot). More to come... :-)
-Video with sound support on the screenshot texture of the 3d models in the gamelistmenu using realmedia *.rm files. I love it! Here is a demo video of it in action: zaxxon.wmv
-Study mode in the gamelist menu. You can now also manipulate the view and rotate in place the 3d models in the gamelist menu.
-Goto the first entry in the gamelist that starts with one, two or three letters entered just like you would enter highscores with the joystick.
-Option to shutdown windows when the fe is closed.
    - prophet

  • ClrMAME Pro 253a & ZipMax 0.22 - Roman Scherzer recently updated ClrMAME Pro with some minor fixes, and released a new version of ZipMax! What's ZipMax you ask? Roman put it this way: "Tired of huge bad compressed zipfiles? Want to use the advantages of 7zip.com's zip compressor? Or the smart compress features of ClrMamePro? Well... Then take a look at this little program. You may enjoy it." - prophet

  • PacMAME .55 (.NET) and PacTray 7.5.2 - Pac-Maniacs will be glad to know PacMAME & PacTray have been updated! PacMAME is an unofficial version of MAME supporting many unusual Pac-Man hacks and related games, and Pactray is it's frontend. Here's the new stuff:

    -Optimized the VB compile,

    -CRC updates in PACMAME.EXE,
    -Rom description updates,
-Tourniquets' Hotrod(SE) patch (1 Coin/1 Start for menu, 2 Coin/2 Start to exit),
    - prophet

  • Archimedes Emulation Update - RedSquirrel is an Acorn Archimedes Emulator for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, now up to version 0.5! Apparently this latest build features faster blitting, more accurate timing and various other tweaks and bug fixes. • Satourne Does Dynamite Deka - Wow... Progress on Satourne, a Sega Saturn/ST-V emulator, appears to be going really well! • Futurama's Future - Tin_Foil emailed me about this campaign to bring the popular animated series back to life, so if you're a fan, get clicking. (Yes, I know it's not emulation or retrogaming.) - prophet

  • Marble Madness Pocketed - Atari's classic Marble Madness has been emulated for Pocket PC's! Quite an achievment IMO considering the game ran on relatively "fast" multiple CPU (7Mhz 68010 + 6502 etc.) hardware. You can download a limited demo version for free, but the full package is $20. According to Marconelly (thanks for the email), it gets decent speeds (20-30fps) on his 180Mhz Casio, so it's a safe bet that 206Mhz ARM based Pocket PC's (iPaqs etc.) will see very good frame rates. Plus they've also adapted the controls to work with the stylus and touchscreen for that real analog feel. - prophet

  • FMAME32 0.58 - Following the recent full source release of MAME32, we now have M.A.S.H's FMAME32! It includes all his usual FixMAME features, plus category folders, extra folders for DECO, Playchoice & CVS, a flags & video attributes folder and more. - prophet

  • MAME WIP - Santeri updated the work-in-progress page again! Amidst Haze's latest work and various tweaks and fixes here and there, keep an eye out for news of a 5 - 10% tilemap speedup via MMX optimizations, courtesy of Andrea Mazzoleni! That just might push some of those annoying "almost full speed on my system" games over the edge. :) - prophet

  • New DreamSNES out - Marcus Comstedt, Peter Bortas, and Per Hedbor have released a new version of DreamSNES, the port of SNES9x for Sega Dreamcast! This version is supposed to have a signifigant speed increase. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it looks quite promising.. even the older (slower) versions were playable with regards to RPG or strategy games (action games tended to be a bit choppy). Check out the homepage here, also check out DC Emulation's DreamSNES page where one can download pre-made disc images of the program. Thanks to [Rabite] for the news. - metallik

And if you have to shoot a few cops in the process, well... The game includes TCP networking allowing you to meet (and shoot) other human drug dealers. Computer drug dealers are currently in development. Changes: Several bugs and annoyances which occurred when using the Windows version of dopewars have been fixed. The Windows server can now also be run as an "NT Service" under more recent Windows versions, and the Unix server is more "daemon-like" now. License: GPL. - chris
