  • Gens v1.10 - Hi guys, I'm still here but very busy with my so called real life.

Sega Genesis emulation at its best ! Stéphane Dallongeville made a emulation breakthrough ! His new Gens version offers preliminary Sega CD support ! Right now it works only with a handful REAL CDs - but it looks very promising in my opinion.

    * Prelemenary SEGA CD emulation added :
    - Sub 68000 (100%)
    - Prg Ram and Word Ram implemented (95%)
    - PCM chip (100% but stil buggy)
    - GFX rotation and enlargement (60%)
    - Font color/data (100%)
    - CDD (70%)
    - CDC (60%)
    - BRAM saves supported
    - No graphics conversion, no ISO support, no save state support yet
    * Added an option to improve the DAC sound (voices) or not.
This option can be enabled/disabled only by key-shorcut (see in the shorcuts section) because i don't recommend you to always use it since this can cause sound bugs with some games.
    * Added the possibility to force software blit for Fullscreen "Normal" and "Double" render mode.
This option can be enabled/disabled only by key-shorcut (see in the shorcuts section) because almost people don't need to use it, try it only for speed issue.
    * We can now choose the order of country detection.
    * Undocumented scroll mode implemented.
    * Undocumented plan size mode implemented.
    * Rewrite the VDP IO control part, little speed increase.
    * Fixed VDP sprite table register (bug added in Gens 1.00)

  • Modeler 0.9.1 - Modeler 0.9.1 has been released. Changes from 0.9.0:

    Win32 specific:

    * Rewritten DirectSound driver (with inspiration from Final Burn) that fixes the major sound-related slowdowns people were seeing. Also behavior is much better when the framerate is below 60 (sound will no longer break completely up except on extremely slow computers).

    Linux specific:

    * Changed "Multi32 second monitor" option to the more useful "Multi32 dual screen". This is also consistent with the Win32 version.

    Common improvements:

    * On-screen message added when the mouse grab/ungrab toggle is used.
    * Keyboard steering for the driving games added.
    * Frameskip and autoframeskip added.
    * GA2 black screen bug when fighting Death Adder fixed.

  • gnuboy 1.0.2 - gnuboy emulates the Color GameBoy handheld console in portable C, with interfaces for X11, Linux fbcon and svgalib, SDL, DOS, and Windows, with other ports planned in the future. Compatibility with ROMs tested is around 99 percent, and all major hardware features except SGB extensions are supported. Changes: Bugs in sound emulation have been fixed, improving the sound quality in almost all games. Noise channel (#4) now matches pseudo-random sequence output by a real GB very closely and stereo channels, which were swapped before, are fixed. Bugs that broke Konami Collection Vol. 1, Amazing Penguin, and Legend of Zerd were fixed. A crash under strange circumstances and some compile-time issues have been corrected. License: GPL. - chris

  • SNES9x 1.39 - A new release of SNES9x, an excellent Super Nintendo emulator for Windows & Linux, is now available for download! Here's the new stuff:

-Added SDD-1 unknown graphics data logging at the dumper's request. A bit late but might help with Street Fighter 2 Alpha's data dumping. Creates a romname.dat file in the freeze file folder.
-Implemented 16-bit texture support for OpenGL modes in Windows and Linux. Had to support a new pixel format type to do it - RGB5551 (one bit of alpha) which caused me some major problems - black was no longer always pixel value zero!
-Removed the Bump map OpenGL mode from the Windows port (didn't look so good anyway and was slow).
-Added a hidden novelty OpenGL mode (clue: a keyboard shortcut activates it)
-Reverted back to FMod version 3.20 after reports that version 3.33 broke AD3 support.
-Implemented a better work-around for the broken select system call in the Linux kernel - the original work-around was long-winded and stopped working when I implemented OpenGL support under Linux.
-Added the same speed-up hack to the OpenGL code that the Glide code already supported. Basically, if your OpenGL implementation supports 16-bit textures then OpenGL mode should be as fast, or faster than the 3dfx Glide mode.
    -Hopefully fixed Glide support.
-Reverted back to the original colour blending code. The newer code, although more accurate in most cases, had too many glitches and was slower.
-Included multiple Japanese games fixes from Iswashi San.
-Fixed a timing problem caused by a speed up hack that was affecting Top Gear 300. No the game still isn't playable yet, but I noticed the problem while investigating the DSP-4 chip used by the game.

  • New Worm Doing The Rounds - Once again, a rather nasty 'worm' is doing the rounds and wreaking havoc on Microsoft web servers and PCs. Slashdot has the following to say on it:

"A new worm seems to be running rampant Unlike Code Red, it attempts to hit boxes with many different exploits (including what looks like an attempt to exploit boxes still rooted by Code Red). It looks like each IP tries 16 attempts on its neighbors. There is also a new mail worm mailing WAV files or something with bits of what appears to be the registry... it may or may not be related. ... Web servers compromised by this worm apparently attach a "readme.eml" to all web pages served... and due to a bug in IE5, it will automatically execute the file! Yay Internet Explorer!"

This means that you (once again) shouldn't open attachments from people you don't know (or people you DO know, for that matter). Also check Newsbytes for a story on this new worm.

UPDATE: I just checked my email and there were a lot of infected mails. They tried to download something from the net and install it. Be sure to change your security settings (Outlook uses IE5) - atila

  • MIMIC Site Updated - Firstly appologies to M Beaver for not posting this earlier. I was one of those in search for answers on family members in NY.

The MIMIC site was updated with some information about the SH2 core progression. It's tucked away in the archives now because of the lateness of this news article, but if you dig it up it basically states that it's going on nicely but is having some looping issues with the Saturn and ST-V Titan BIOS (did I say ST-V BIOS?). Check it out here for more info.

Link fixed - original posting by flipcode. - Opi

  • Hmm - It may seem a bit odd, but we've begun posting emulation news again. It may help take out minds off the tragedy, even if only for a short while. - atila

  • Generator/MacOS - Richard Bannister emailed me to inform me of v0.33 of the MacOS port of Generator, his Genesis emulator, was released. You can find it here. - flipcode

  • z26 v1.48 - Hey, there's a new version of the Atari 2600 emulator z26. Check out what's new:

    - Screen capture now works in all video modes. If you hold down the = key, you get a fairly continuous stream of pcx files.
    - New fast video modes. These are accessed with the -e (for Eckhard?) command line switch. This allows the Mode-X routines to do 32-bit accesses to the video card. On my computer this more than doubles the speed of the emulator when running in these modes. Unfortunately, they may not work on all video cards. The -e command line switch also enables tall and narrow 160 pixel video modes for modes 0, 1, 2, and 3. These are very fast modes, and they give your games a Vectrex like feel.
    - Added support for a couple of new ROM images.
    - Fixed a stack overflow bug in the GUI.
    - Thanks to Eckhard Stolberg for help with this version. I did not suspect that so much more speed could be had from the video system.

Download it from the afforementioned page if you're like me and love that old tank. - dhalamar

  • Twin Towers - I was up most of the night watching CNN and the Dutch channels, as they provided news around the clock of this absolutely horrific day. The images looked surreal, but unfortunately, they were as real as could be. Manhattan looks like a warzone.

There are rumors floating around of muslims being behind the attack, regarding that I'd like to say the following:

A true muslim would not do such a thing. A true muslim respects life and everything that comes with it. Perhaps they are fundamentalists, but that does not make them muslim. I'd like to point you towards this press release by the American Muslim Political Coordination Council at Islamicity regarding this.

For me, it is vital that people understand the difference between muslims and people who perpetrate these heinous acts.

"The City So Nice They Named It Twice" will never be the same again. America will never be the same again. The world will never be the same again. Our deepest sympathies go out to all who are affected by this tragedy. - atila

  • They Sacrificed Their Life ! - Many brave people died while fulfilling their duties today. They sent 400 firefighters into both towers in NYC - CNN just reported more than 200 of them may have perished, 78 Policemen are missing :/

Each loss of life is worth a cry ! - Opi

  • State of War - The U.S. Congress is already talking about a state of war, military bases across the country are either in threat condition Charlie or Delta, and the U.S. Military is in their highest state of readiness. This is certainly the most tragic attack in U.S. history, with a death toll much higher than that of Pearl Harbor. I am both angry and sad at what has happened, and I fully support a declaration of war if so be. Although the attack was carried out by terroists, it may end up in a battle between nations. Russian President Putin has declared that he will support any action taken by the U.S. government. - chris

  • I know I haven't posted in a while, I moved to a new house and have been extrememly busy with that. But I had at say how shocked I am at the news today. One radio report I heard said that this is the worst attack on the US since Pearl Harbor. The hits happened at the World Trade Center right before 9:00 am. There could have been up to 70,000 people (including non employees) in the buildings at the time, they don't know for sure yet.

I'm glad to hear you're alright Prophet!

    Godspeed, - dutch

  • NYC Update - A NYC RG reader named Sam sent me this: "I'm a faithful retrogamer whos visited your site many, many times and i just want to take this opportunity to send everyone who was in/near or involved the Trade Center Bombing my most heartfelt feelings. I work in lower Manhattan (20th and 6th) I SAW the second plane fly over me and hit the building ! I also saw HUNDREDS of people crying and weeping in the streets as the south tower of the world trade center explode and collapse on itself. My sister got married in the financial center there just a few months ago ..... I encourage ALL New York and anyone remotely near New York to donate blood,,, if nothing else this may do something. MOST casualties are being treated in St. Vincents hospital... im sure they have a phone number set up for information." If anyone knows any appropriate emergency numbers, please email all of the staff here, and hopefully they will post them. Perhaps that might be of some small help. I just heard type O blood is in short supply and most needed. In a short while I'm leaving to go to a local hospital to offer assistance and/or blood, so I will likely be offline for quite some time. - prophet

  • New York City - As our visitors may recall, I live in NYC. At the moment, it's sheer havoc here. Everyone is frightened and emotional. You can smell smoke in the air as far away as Brooklyn where I am at the moment. I thank God that my family and myself live far from the World Trade Center. My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone who has lost their loved ones at this time. Don't know what else to say. Take care everyone, everywhere. - prophet

  • Oh My God - All These Poor People ! - I'm sitting here in front of my TV and have no words left to describe what I saw - this is an unbelievable terrible catastrophe. How can people plan and commit such a crime ? All these poor innocent souls, the blood and tears ...

  • Planes Crash into World Trade Centre - In a very sad event, two planes, believed to be 18 minutes apart, have crashed into the WTC. If you can tune into CNN, you can see re-runs of the recorded second plane crashing into it with massive explosions. One can only hope and pray that casualties will be minimal. Unfortunately we do not have any web news reports to provide more information at this time. - flipcode

  • KOF99 Never Encrypted?! - Hm now here's a news nugget to raise the eyebrow. If you check out the CPS2Shock WIP Page, it turns out KOF99 was never encrypted but, "more a simple case of line swapping, and of course the new banking system".

    - Korean mapper emulation (Dodgeball King)
    - Italian & German translations

  • First X-Box, Now HomeStation - The PC Format magazine has a scoop to open your eyes. Microsoft is working on some sort of "top-secret" PC/X-box hybrid set-top which will run some variant of Windows, and be capable of playing both PC and X-Box titles, and will be based on the nVidia nForce chipset. Here's a quote:

"Sources say a Microsoft .NET server will dish out movies, music, messaging, games and TV programming - and with a stonking hard drive, it'll also double up as digital TV recorder (à la TiVo). In addition, it will wirelessly interface with portable devices such as digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players and telephones using HomeRF or Bluetooth protocols. It may even manage home automation."

  • Microsoft Survives DOJ... Sorta - The IT software goliath Microsoft has survived the clutches of the US Department of Justice in their attempts to break the company up, AND its chase for the untying of Internet Explorer from Microsoft's operating systems. Here's a quote:

"The US Department of Justice won't be asking for Microsoft's break-up any more, nor will it be coming back for another go at the tying of IE to Windows, which was one of the matters sent back to the district court by the appeals court for further consideration."

The story goes on about the break up would be messy and difficult to get through the courts, and that they want to take a look at what Microsoft has been doing since the trial began, i.e. Windows XP. Check out the full story here. - flipcode

I am fairly techno-babble free, but forgive me if I get too technical at times. =P - flipcode

  • DAPHNE WIP - Brad O. a "huge DAPHNE fan" informed me about an interesting posting on the DAPHNE Emulator Discussion Forum regarding the future DAPHNE development. Thanks man :) Looks like these are good times for fans of Laserdisk based games.
It took some time to get an opportunity to see and play Dragon's Lair here in Germany back in the good old days. The only machine I knew about was located in a pub nearby an American barracks more than 100 miles away from my home. I had to sleep inside my friends car .... well it was worth the effort :)

"I just want to let you know that a new version of Daphne (the first ever Laserdisc Game Emulator) is scheduled to be released on September 12th (1 year anniversary from the last release).

Information regarding quantity of games is not totally official, but it will most likely support 8 laserdisc games with MPEG2 support (in addition to support for LD players utilizing the actual laserdisc).

It also handles video overlays that some games require such as Cliffhanger. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Cliffhanger, Thayer's Quest, Super Don Quixote, Astron Belt, Galaxy Ranger, Starblazer, and Cobra Command
    ".

  • xtrs 4.8 - xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the X Window System. Changes: Output to the X server is now flushed periodically from the timer task; this fixes problems with the display not being updated when it should have been in certain games and operating systems. The key transition queue is now flushed if the Z-80 program does not poll the keyboard often enough; this gets rid of an unwanted type-ahead effect that was often seen in games that play sound or visual effects between levels. • Catweasel Floppy Read/Write Tools 2.4 - The Catweasel Floppy Read/Write Tools are software for the Catweasel ISA universal floppy disk controller. cw2dmk will read several kinds of floppy disk, some of which ordinary PC controllers have trouble with, and save them in the DMK disk image format. (The DMK format is used in several emulators including MESS). cw2dmk can handle (at least) any disk written using a Western Digital 177x/179x floppy disk controller, a PC-style NEC765-compatible controller, or a Digital Equipment Corporation RX02 controller. The tools run on both Linux and MS-DOS. Changes: The RX02 autodetector should no longer fire erroneously (2.2). The floppy drive no longer has to supply a Drive Ready signal, so older drives will work (2.3). The FM/MFM detector now uses the previous track's last encoding as its initial guess instead of always starting with FM; this helps in reading out-of-spec MFM disks that have the first sector header immediately after the index hole with almost no gap (2.4). License: GPL. - chris

  • KoF 99 Encryption Almost Broken - Razoola has updated his WIP section with some really exciting news :

"We now have good P1 and P2 roms for arcade version of Kof99, but due to a nasty new banking system used on these boards data in the last meg of P2 is scrambled (as stored on ROM). The custom chips take the scrambled data and corrects it depending on the values it receives while running. Its very possible that all the new NeoGeo games use this system, even ones that arn't encrypted. This is a bit of a draw back but nothing we can't handle."

Sounds good, eh ? Thanks to Brian A. Troha for the email :) - Opi

  • DRAGONS LAIR! - OMG OMG OMG! significant achievements in the emulation of DRAGON'S LAIR in MAME! Here is an excerpt from Mix:

    HI FRIENDS!

Here it is, after less than 3 months of work, a complete driver to play Dragon's Lair in MAME using Laser Disc Emulation.

Basically, the LaserDisc is emulated by using equivalent scenes movies (MPEG2) that can be found on Digital Leisure Dragon's Lair DVDROM.

By using a frame-to-movie conversion table, specified in a configuration file, you can play the original ROM, together with the quality movies available on the DVDROM.

Whoa!! Update: Although Mix states the driver is "complete", it is actually still very much WIP and may not be included in the next MAME release. - chris
