I've been using it myself for a long time now, ever since GuruChoc's Arcade Heaven first mentioned it. It's a Windows based download manager with some very nice features. For example you can get a *remote* preview of files inside a large zip, and download ONLY selected files! No more downloading huge zips just for one little file inside. You can also simply highlight a large selection of file links on a webpage and download them. Really useful stuff.

Check out the wonderful screenshots at The Guru's site. You'll find 7 shots from Bryan McPhail's new MAME driver. Brian Troha informed me "this was the game for which people could (not) figure out the CPU, which was later discovered to be an ARM 32 bit CPU (simular to those in the Acorn Archimedes computers). Not to mention there are a few other Data East arcade games believed to us this chip as well (IIRC): Tattoo Assassins & Figher's History to name 2. Perhaps quite a few post 1992 games... only time will tell." (Now PLEASE someone emulate Moon Shuttle.:) (Thanks Smitdogg, Brian T. & Shawn)

Also added support for MvC."

IR Pinball - Hippie.net is currently dealing with a DoS attack, rendering the site and downloads useless. Chances are that this is the final straw and it will simply cease to exist. So much for a cool pinball resource :(
Thunder Hoop 2 - Emulatronia has posted 7 pics of Thunder Hoop 2 by Gaelco, but because of protection issues, the game is unplayable.
Interview - Be Emulated has posted an interview they did with Eli Dayan, the author of Pretendo and CopyNES, an NES devkit for the BeOS system. You can read the interview here.
Overclockking Craziness! - A few Finnish guys have overclocked a 2.2Ghz P4 to 3.675Ghz (!!!). You can see how they accomplished that here. They should add one benchmark though: MAME :))

"She Got Kegs!" - Kegs32 0.60 3rd Release was released today, it's the WIN32 version of KEGS for Unix. Kegs is an Apple ][ GS emu, here's what's new:

- Support Drag and drop in disk image loader
- Support Visual Themes of Windows XP
- Support variable speed control
- Scanline/Interlace video mode via F12 key.

Get them Kegs, if you know how to use 'em ;) Thanks to Kojote for the news.
Kega 0.01 - Steve Snake has updated his wicked little Genesis/Sega-CD emulator, here's the list of new things:
* Fixed stupid Shadow/Highlight bug in DOUBLE mode (I accidentally deleted a line)
* Added 15-Bit Colour support
* Added information on what to do if your display is in 32-Bit Colour mode. This will later be replaced by 32-Bit Colour support.
* Kega no longer requires ASPI to be present (Just had to remove one line!)
* Made a few changes to the CD-ROM functions. Hopefully CD-ROM problems will be gone now.
* Rewrote Joystick handlers. Most, if not all, joysticks should work now.
* Added the ability to remap Joystick Buttons. See below for more info.
* Fixed the "APPLY" button, even though it isn't really neccessary, it was causing some confusion with several users. So now it works.
* ZIP support. This is my own UNZIP code, using nothing but the RFC docs for reference. (in ASM ;-) ok, I'm a speed freak...) Kega does not require ZLIB.DLL.
* Rewrite/Speedup to some CDC emulation code. Should improve SegaCD speed slightly.
* Fixed stupid bug in .BIN format for SegaCD images.
* Altered Genesis .BIN/SMD loader to handle incorrectly named files. Thanks to Dave for the hint ;-)
* Several compatibility fixes. More games should work now.
* Improved Country AutoDetection. Thanks to Eidolon for the info.
* Cleaned up ASPI code.
* Several other small fixes that I've forgotten about...
AdvanceMAME+ 0.57.2 - Cyberfix (a friendly regular on the AdvanceMAME list) has released an unofficial build of Andrea Mazzoleni's AdvanceMAME (which is itself an unofficial version of MAME) called AdvanceMAME+! It features "support to the command line for -listfull, -listclones, -noclones," various bug fixes (i.e. KoF2000 graphics fix), and also adds a few things like Pong & Monaco GP. (Now fully MAME license compliant and also includes more bug fixes!)

"TransMAME!" ;) - Transparency effects have prompted some heavy debates lately, and insideoutboy rose to the challenge with "TransMAME" (awesome screenshot included)! Afterall, why stop at a few sprites. ;P
HotRods On TV! - No, not a show about racing... Conway from HanaHo just informed me that the HotRod and ArcadePC will be featured tomorrow night on the Discovery Science Channel's Electric Playground! Depending on what gets edited out, you might even get to see the factory where all the products are built, as well as interviews with Conway and Richard Ragon. I don't have that cable channel, but take a look if you're a subscriber and let me know what they show! (This plug is dedicated to Tony H. *inside joke*;)
Update: - Saint from ArcadeControls.com kindly sent me the direct link about this episode (#12), and also told me the show airs tomorrow night at 7:30 AM, 12:30 PM, and 3:30 PM. Thanks Saint! :)
Devastator Reviewed in Maximum PC - The always excellent Maximum PC (print magazine) recently published a review for an emulation arcade control panel called the Devastator! They seemed to like it quite a lot, and with 2 sticks, a trakball and spinner, I can imagine why. Although, they need a 6 button layout to the right of each stick to properly support fighters and games like Missile Command that need 3 buttons in a row. But otherwise it looks great IMO! And it's always cool seeing MAME/emulation mentioned in magazines. :) (Thanks David Haynes)
Update: - Check out RoarVGM to read a scan of the review online! (Thanks Tortri)
GP32 Emulated? - There's a portable 32bit system in Korea called the "Game Park 32" (similar to the GBA) which may have already been emulated. Since there's no "GeePee32" binary to download yet, and only some very pretty screenshots and movies, I can't confirm anything. But it's interesting to contemplate on a dreary winter's eve. (Thanks Jess Ragan)
MAMEInfo.dat 3.73 - M.A.S.H. released the latest version of his information file, now including the newest bugs as of January 16th, newest WIP, added 'VIDEO HARDWARE NOTES' from the vidhrdw source, & correct info.dat bugs.

Bah! - I wasn't able to update yesterday, because Chello had a problem in their network which they were unable to fix. So I could use pretty much everything, except the WWW part of the internet.
Microsoft Changes Strategy - Bill Gates sent out an email to employees yesterday stating that they should (basicly) focus more on security. Security should come before all sorts of new features you won't be using in programs anyway :) One sentence that struck me was this:
Compensation plans of Microsoft product engineers, such as raises and bonuses, will also be tied to how secure their products are.
Mebbe this will mean the end for Swiss cheese from Seattle =) Thanks to Floach and Jandaman for the news.

Supercade Review - No, this is not a new arcade cabinet for the home :) No, this is a rather nice "coffee table" book about classic gaming. Mike Stulir read it and posted his review at Back In Time. Here's a small excerpt:
"I think what really annoys me about this book are the quantity of errors and incorrect facts. There many ridiculous and glaring mistakes in this book. Some mistakes were so obvious, I am surprised no one caught them before the book went to press."
You want to click that link now, don't you ;)
Marbles Deluxe - That popular freeware AMIGA game MARBLES has been remade for the PC format, by the original author, and you can download it from Retro64.

He decides to have himself a little snack, so he grabs a pretzel and sticks it in his mouth .... and then tries to swallow it! Subsequently, he nearly chokes on it! 2 Euro Coin - After a 11 days of handling the Euro money, I can safely say that the bills are horrible. It doesn't feel like the good ol' Dutch money. The notes are either too small or too big. And then there's the 2 Euro coin, on which Finland and Sweden are shaped like a man's private parts. Oh, the shame... This link *IS* work safe, btw ;)
NES Devkit - If you downloaded the NES Devkit we posted yesterday, chances are that you may have noticed that one of the demos required a file called qtintf.dll. That particular file can now be download from the NES Devkit site at SourceForge. With this file you can now run the tech demo :)

Time to try something new, something based on established OSes, and something that allows me to do what bI do best: make games. Will it work? I don't know... but it can't hurt to try...
I guess we'll all reap the benefits of that :) Thanks to _aR_ for the news.

It focuses on the exact reproduction of graphical effects possible on the C64, and comes in three "flavors" (Frodo, Frodo PC, and Frodo SC) with increasingly higher quality of emulation, but at the cost of higher processing power requirements. Frodo has been ported to a number of systems, including handheld computers. The Unix version can use either SDL, X11, or SVGAlib to display the graphics. It's still a mini (now called the Ultra model), but this time there's a nifty coin box built-in and I chose to have it built like a normal cabinet, so there's no keyboard drawer, and the control panel is a flip up style! I also am using my own PC BTW. It's awesome - I hope to get some pictures soon and update my ArcadePC Mini review as well. A home isn't a home without an arcade machine. :P

MAME.DK - MAME.DK has disabled downloads for anonymous users, bandwith is only supplied to those who register (for the time being). They had to resort to this again because the bandwith usage has gone through the roof, since the new roms are about a GB (give or take a little) in size.
ZFE 1.0 Released - StatMat mailed me the other day about the release of ZFE, the very excellent frontend for ZSNES. Now I know ZSNES has it's own frontend but this is something totally different. It has loads of options and settings and really is worth checking out. You can grab it from here.
Boycott Advance - The Mac version of Boycott Advance is now in sync with the latest Windows release. Get it from my home page - and while you're there, check out my redesign!
MAME32 .57 Released - MAME32 has been updated in line with the latest release. You can download from it's homepage here.
BBC Micro Games - Stairway to Hell has been updated with almost 1500 *tested* BBC Micro Games, in disk image format (more than 10 times the amount previously online!!) Thanks to Dave for the news.
Atari800 1.2.2 - Atari800 is an Atari 8-bit computer (400, 800, and XL and XE series) and Atari 5200 game system emulator for DOS, Windows, Amiga, Atari ST, Mac, and Linux/UNIX. It includes support for Atari cartridge ROMs, popular Atari disk images files, running Atari binaries directly from the host system, and accessing the host filesystem from within the emulated Atari. Changes: There are some code clean-ups. The configure script now asks no questions, and instead uses the traditional '--enable-FEATURE' and '--disable-FEATURE' flags. There are some bugfixes and Atari Falcon port updates. License: GPL.
xmame/xmess-0.56.2 - xmame/xmess-0.56.2 is finally out! xmame-0.57.1 should follow soon, once Lawrence has recovered fully from New Year's Eve. Thanks to the many contributors without whom the changelog would have been much smaller. Changes since 0.56.1 include:
Added the MESS 0.56 core.
Added contrib/kxmame. This script launches xmame.x11 in builds of KDE which have problems with the window not opening. (Sylvain Trosset and Hoonis)
Updated dga2.txt to mention Radeon DGA2 fixes that are in the XFree86 cvs tree. (Shyouzou Sugitani)
Updated GLmame to v0.92, see src/unix/doc/changes.opengl. (Sven Goethel)
Added extra debugging output to the DGA 2.0 driver. (Shyouzou Sugitani)
Fixed a compile error that could occur in blit.h due to a C++-style comment. (Artane)
Added the ability for xmame to interpret file names as game names, e.g., 'xmame.x11 /path/to/mspacman.zip' should now work. (Peter Trauner)
Renamed several xmame-specific keyboard functions to prevent a clash with svgalib and to avoid future clashes. (Bugzilla #123)
Added rapid-fire support for joysticks: Use -rapidfire or -rapidf.
Added an SDL azerty keymap to doc/xmamerc.dist. (Luc Saillard)
The xfx target can now compile, though it still won't run. (Viet)
Upgraded to romalizer 0.7pre2; fixed a problem that caused '-listfull mokomo' to break romalizer. (Christopher Stone)
The svgafx target compiles again.
Added some notes to makefile.unix regarding known problems with gcc optimization flags on IA32 platforms.
A patch against xmame-0.56.1 can be found here.

Best Wishes For The New Year! - We'd like to wish everyone all the best for 2002!
SYSTEM16.COM Updated - Sixtoe has updated system16.com with news from the Sega, Namco, Atari and Konami front.
M1 0.6 - Version 0.6 of this Model 1 and 2A sound emulator has been released. It can be downloaded from here. Changes from 0.5:
* Added Japanese Daytona set, corrected badly dumped US set using it's ROMs
* Added WingWar R360 version
* Added minimal user interface to both Linux and Win32: ESC now exits cleanly (useful for those of you still running DOS-based Windows like 98 and ME) and + and - keys to navigate the tunes for each game.
* Overall volume boosted substantially. Now you get more of the benefit out of your 16-bit soundcard ;-)
* Added log-to-.WAV feature
* Fixed sample addressing glitch that caused some sounds not to play properly (notably the start of VF command #1 has thunder and "whoosh" sounds which were missing in 0.5. This was first fixed in Modeler 0.9.3a).
* Daytona US version set now uses the sample ROMs from the Japanese set (they're interchangable, and the ones in the original US set were bad). I realize it kinda sucks that you have to duplicate the samples in two zips now, but hey :)
* Win32 version now uses a statically linked libz so no external DLL should be necessary.
MESS Update - Okay, I've just updated the official MESS site. Sorry about the delay, but I am in a different timezone. Uuugh... writing HTML at 8:00am is no fun.
New MESS!!! - heheh yes it's for real this time ;-) The MESS Organization has released MESS 0.56 in time for the new year celebration! MESS is now being shipped with a GUI version as well (Win32)! Enjoy! :)
