  • libvm68k 1.0.5 - libvm68k is an M68000 virtual machine library written in C++. It was first developed for use in Virtual X68000 but only contains the generic layer of it so that it can be reused in other emulator projects. • HuC 3.02 - HuC is a PC Engine C compiler. It can create ROMs (hucard) or CD images and is bundled with an assembler and all kinds of libraries. You can ouput text, scrolls, make sound, control CD, handle sprites and tiles, and more. Changes: The images created by HuC are now much smaller (libraries are merged when possible and banks are better filled). Fonts were improved. Several existing CD functions were fixed. Plenty of CD and arcade card functions were added. License: Unlicensed? with Source. - chris

  • gnuboy 1.0.0 - gnuboy emulates the Color GameBoy handheld console in portable C, with interfaces for X11, Linux fbcon and svgalib, SDL, DOS, and Windows, with other ports planned in the future. Changes: Auto-loading of config files on a per-ROM basis, improvements to the default configuration, much better documentation, and better visual quality in the Matrox hardware scaling on Linux fbcon. This release also works around the bug in gcc 2.96 that was causing compile-time problems for many Redhat users by disabling an unnecessary optimization, and provides a way to disable CPU-specific optimizations at compiletime so distro maintainers can produce packages that work with older CPUs. Various other fixes and cleanups to the code have been made as well. License: GPL. - chris

  • QBFE has been updated to v0.6091. If for some reason you don't know what this is, this is one of the best frontends for the DOS version of Marat's vGBA. QBFE is cardware, meaning that you can get it to show 2000 ROMs rather than 1000 if you send Kojote a postcard (gee, wonder where he got that idea. =P). Here's what's new:
    Fixed tiny mistakes in Swedish-Language Support!
    Recoded Language-Code-Routines! (Code is smaller now ;)
    Fixed Problems with Registration-Key

    You can download it from the official page right here. - dhalamar

  • Opera v5.12 - My personal browser of choice has been updated to version 5.12. Not a real big update this time around, but nevertheless, this is a great browser. Here's what's new:
    * Enhanced pop-up window handling
    * Java-enabled version includes the newest Runtime Environment,
    version 1.3.1
    * Bug fixes, mainly in the e-mail client
    * Option to search Opera's knowledge base directly, import Netscape
    e-mail and the possibility of sending a URL to Opera's e-mail
    client

    Of course, you don't need to download the one with Java. Without Java, it's only a 2 meg download. So you don't have any excuse not to at least TRY this one if you haven't already. ;) There's also this option on Opera's homepage to make your own browser. I think I might check it out, I'm envisioning a Nine Inch Nails themed browser... - dhalamar

  • Virtual X68000 1.1.7 - Virtual X68000 is a virtual machine that emulates a Sharp X68000 and optionally its DOS API. Changes: Updates for Libvm68k 1.0.4. License: GPL.

  • OC ReMix, GameGo!, #143 - OC #143: Darkside o' the Screen just went up, and some other cool news: many of you probably read Gamefan magazine, and if you did hopefully knew that hardcore 2d fan ECM was its editor. Gamefan's gone, but ECM's new magazine GameGo! just had its premiere issue. ECM mailed me regarding OC ReMix with a request for a M.U.S.H.A. (old genesis shooter) ReMix. Naturally, I obliged. You can get the ReMix on the site, and see a short blurb about OCR in GameGo's first issue, on newsstands now. Pretty cool. - david

  • Genesis Collective - The Genesis Collective added a several thousand Game Genie codes to their database, check this:

    "We loaded up the database with 9542 codes for 264 different games. Then we put the codes directly on the Genesis Database pages. Finally, we added the ability to download the codes for any game as a PAT file that can be used with many Genesis emulators. The PAT files are generated on-the-fly from the database, so you always get the most recent codes."

    Impressive, to say the least. - atila

  • Microsoft wins appeal - Microsoft has won it's appeal of the decision handed down earlier ordering the company to be broken up into seperate divisions. An appeals court ruled that Judge Jackson acted improperly, leaving him open to charges of bias. The case is to be given to a new judge to decide. The original findings of fact will remain, but the remedy (i.e. breakup) has been thrown out and must be decided by the new judge. Read more here, here, or here. - metallik

  • Virtual X68000 1.1.6 - Virtual X68000 is a virtual machine that emulates a Sharp X68000 and optionally its DOS API. It will eventually run application programs for X68000 without any proprietary software including ROM BIOS, but currently lacks many key functions and is still in early development phase. Changes: This is the first release in which you can actually pilot a starship. See the README for key bindings. This is a demonstration of the fly-by-wire computer system that makes flying in zero-G without air resistance as easy as piloting an F-16. Note that the computer cannot properly compensate for all movements, especially sharp turns at high velocities (this phenomenon is known to Wing Commander fans as afterburner slide). • BSNES is a project to port ZSNES over to BeOS. And, unfortunately, Caz quit the project (he's the guy who ports over most of the emulators over to BeOS). There's one person left, and the only reason he's going on with it is because of Star Ocean recently being decrypted. If you wanna help out with the porting of the emulator, by all means, head on over to the official site and send him an E-Mail! - dhalamar

  • BeOS Stuff - I just visited BeEmulated and there's all sorts of cool stuff on there that I've missed. :)

    The following emulators are available for it, though they're all discontinued, but if you're running or using BeOS, hey, what the hell. Can't hurt. :)

    BeGameboy, which is obviously a GB/GBC emulator, BeBombJack which emulates the arcade version of Bomb Jack, BeGemeniWing emulates Gemeni Wing arcade, and an emulator that runs the Kung Fu Master arcade game.

    And did you know there is a version of Bochs for BeOS?

    AND a really cool idea, it's called Sarien which lets you play a lot of the older Sierra DOS games in BeOS.

    I can't believe I missed all this stuff. :) You can grab it all and more from BeEmulated. - dhalamar

  • Efront dead, Arcade@Home gone? - Just read over at Vintage Gaming that the last gasp of life has left the corpse formerly known as eFront Media. It appears their site and DNS servers have been shut off. For those with short memories, eFront made international headlines when ICQ logs between managers were leaked. Check here for details.

    The VGN article also says that arcadeathome.com is also dead.. Tim Eckel (A@H owner) claims this is due to the demise of eFront's DNS servers. However, this doesn't make much sense to me.. if you compare the DNS records of eFront against the DNS records of arcadeathome, you can see that Tim controls his own DNS and could move it wherever he wants to. The A@H record was updated today.. perhaps the site is not dead and is simply waiting for DNS to propogate (although an NSlookup to the directnic servers themselves results in no domain record for AAH..) I guess we'll find out soon enough. - metallik

The main people responsible for this project are The Dumper and zsKnight :), and the play testers StevieY, pagefault, MKendora, and Spinner 8, and of course makuchan for dumping the rom, and myself for getting the project started.

    Go and get the XORs from DeJap's site. :) I think the lyric Bow down before the one you serve from the Nine Inch Nails song Head Like a Hole kinda fits in in my opinion. :) - dhalamar

  • Gamu is a new, open source GBA emulator for the X Windows system and Linux... and that's about all I know. Here's a quote from the page regarding the homebrew GBA demos:

    Unfortunately many of the demos work, if I support them. But I've decided in my own mean, nasty ways, that gamu will actually be a GBA emulator, not a "Demo emulator." Note to demo authors: 1) no writes to rom. 2) Set the background display bits correctly, and 3) correctly align your data reads/writes!

    You can go to the page right here if you want to check it out. Thanks to GBAEmu for the news. - dhalamar

  • Two new recent tables for Visual Pinmame: First, IT-290 and Tbone released the 1984 Williams classic Space Shuttle yesterday (the 14th). This table is fully playable and very fast, with the only problem seeming to be an occasional glitch in MAME's sound emulation (see the readme file). This table, with it's assortment of ramps, is generally credited for helping revitalize the pinball industry after a big slump caused by the popularity of video arcade games. High Speed and Pinbot would continue this trend.

    Also, Dan Roth has just released an amazing recreation of The Machine: Bride of Pinbot. Amazing, because it manages to fully incorporate the rotating "head" playfield, just like the real game! The attention to detail in this table is excellent.. very much worth the download. Note: Upon initializing the sim, you have to wait a bit for the head to calibrate, just like on the real machine.

    Get both tables from AJ's site (which seems to have gotten a nice remodeling!) - metallik

  • NesterDC was updated FINALLY. =P If you don't know what this is, it's a NES emulator for the Sega Dreamcast. Here's what's new:

    New Features:
    - The sound is close to 100% perfect.
    - The game menu selection screen has been improved, but there is now a limit of 2048 (with a 128 character limit per name) roms per cd.
    - The menu's look much better now, thanks to the artwork of Dave Arnold, who is also the webmaster of nesterdc.emulation64.com/
    - Version 3 is noticably faster than Version 2.
    - There are new frame skip options.
    - If a game exists in the GAMES directory called GAME.NES, NesterDC will skip all intro menu's and run that game. This will lead to single game cd's that feel more like a real NES.
    - The source code has been released.

    You can download it right here. Thanks to RoundApe for the news. - dhalamar

    Huge code clean-up, lot of unused crap removed.
    A lot of cosmetic changes.
    Added Free ROM menu, has requested.
    Probably some other little thing i forgotten.

    About Vortendo not being freeware anymore, here's a little excerpt from the readme:

  • RockNESX - Alexandre da Veiga released the second beta of his Windows port of RockNESX.
    • The battery save is FINALLY working;
    • The GUI menu item File->Play Selected Rom has been fixed;
    • Now RockNES X stores the roms list in a file rocklist.dat), so it do not need to search for your 5000 roms every time the emu is started :)
    • The way screenshots are named has changed. Now, the screenshots are automatically saved as romname 0.bmp, romname 1.bmp... romname N.bmp. It is not needed to change the slot to save different shots during the gameplay. Using the old system (slots), you could save up to 10 shots per game. Now this number has been increased to 2 billion :)
