  • Mupen64 v0.2 - Mupen64 is a multi-platform Nintendo64 emulator. After five long months a new release is out. Changes are;

  • Nestopia v1.05 - A Netopia update was released today. Netopia is an excellent Windows based Nintendo (NES) emulator. Changes in this release are;
    • Corrected the CRC database searcher (several games had the wrong name displayed in the title bar)
    • Fixed a bug that made the user defined paths not to be saved properly.
    • Changed so that images with support for both PAL and NTSC will prioritize NTSC and not PAL as in earlier versions when "auto mode" is selected.
    • Added mapper 107 ("Magic Dragon")
    • Added mapper 134 ("Olympiq IQ")
    • Added mapper 135 ("Super Pang")
    • Added mapper 198 (chinese version of "Destiny of an Emperor")
    • Fixed a bug in the UNIF loader that caused all files having a board name beginning with NES-,UNL-,HVC-,BTL- or BMC- to be parsed wrongly.
    • Fixed a bug that caused the application to hang and/or crash when Alt-Tabbing.
    • Removed most of the sound clicks and pops heard when the audio gets disabled (menu entering, window moving etc).
    • Made so that all the save slots automatically gets imported/exported to/from files using .ns1 through ns9 on load/close. It's ON by default.
    • Fixed a PPU bug that could cause the application to crash when loading up a game in the middle of an NSF tune.
    • Fixed the frame rate timer. In previous versions it had the potential to cause serious lagging.
    • Fixed the fullscreen mode cursor, sometimes it could get visible/invisible when it really shouldn't.
    • Changed to using C++ exceptions, way better error handling now.
    • Added the option to add custom keys to the "save to next slot" and "load from last slot" commands.
    • Added 8bit graphic mode. filters are not supported for this one.
    • Improved the TV-mode graphic filter and removed all visual artifacts in the marginals.
    • Added an option in the preferences dialog to disable the use of the ROM database.
    • Added more logfile info.

  • Atari 2600 Homestar Runner RPG - Paul Slocum has announced his new project Homestar Runner RPG, based off the HomeStar Runner cartoon character! Mike and Matt Chapman (creators of Homestar Runner) will be contributing story, graphics, and creative ideas to the game. A demo ROM is also available for download.   • Gest v0.65 & Source - Normally I'd wait a few days and post about two or three Gest updates at the same time. But because the news is slow today and the fact that the author has released the source code this time around as well I'll make an exception. Changes in version 0.65 are

  • Universe BIOS v1.2 - "The Universe BIOS is for owners of a real MVS arcade system that want an easy way to change country region or between Arcade or Console mode on boot. Also included are other features that are not normally possible using the standard MVS bios."
    Changes in this release are;
    • Additions
    • Added Multislot support to the Jukebox Player and Gamecart CRC check.
    • Added the ability to continue on from a hardware error.
    • Allowed Test Mode button to give access to TEST mode menu while in console mode.
    • Cheats for MATRIMELEE added to the cheats database.
    • Test mode improvements
    • Time added to main test mode menu screen (date format changes from euro to usa region).
    • Crosshatch test shrunk to match fullscreen used by most games.
    • Full color fade bars in color test (why the original BIOS never did this is beyond me).
    • Setting up the code number will now be in English even when set to Japan region.
    • Soft DIP settings will always be in English even if set to Japan region. (Soft DIPs shown will always be from Euro region, this means some settings will not work unless system set to EURO region, like the language soft DIP for example).
    • Changes
    • Disabling the hardware test (general bios settings) now disables the Z80 test also.
    • Visually improved the gamecart crc check screen making it better.
    • Games that use the protected banking system no longer calculate the crc32 for those banks, instead it is indicated that they are custom.
    • Doing a 'WORK RAM TEST' (all hard dips on at power on) no longer clears region settings.
    • Updated CRC32 database although there could still be errors.
    • Fixes
    • Fixed a lockup if entering the Memory Card Manager or Test Mode from the splash screen when running in console mode with hard DIP 8 (stop) on.
    • Fixed 'unlock Kyo & Iori' kof99 cheat (no longer jumps to character select after win).
    • Fixed distorted music in Jukebox Player with games ROTD, KOF2002 and MATRIMELEE.
    • Fixed REALBOUT2, KOF98, NEOCUP98 and BREAKREV reset on the 'winners dont use drugs' screen on multislot Hardware.

  • RockNES 3.0 - The DOS based Nintendo (NES) emulator RockNES, has been updated to version 3.0 today. Changes in this release are;

    • New savestate file format, fully composed by tagged blocks;

  • Scale2x 1.6 - Scale2x is a real-time graphics effect able to increase the resolution of small bitmaps guessing the missing pixels without blurring the images. Changes:
    • Added an example of the fast implementation of the effects applied to a generic bitmap. There is also an example for the not obvious Scale4x effect.
    • Revised the command line tools. Now they support all the formats of .PNG images. Also images with 16 bits per channel.
    • Fixed a linking problem with some libpng installations.

  • GameBase 0.94 Released! - James Burrows released a new version of his universal emulator frontend, GameBase, here's what's new:

    NEW:
    - Added an 'Auto Syntax Check' option when writing gemus scripts

    CHANGES:
    - auto-calculation of supported emu file types - no longer need to manually
    specify them (can still use them as defaults tho)
    - Now shows musician photo when clicking on the music details tab for a game
    - Minor interface changes
    - Amended licence/disclaimer

    FIXES:
    - Fixed crash when minimising the gemus script editor window
    - Fixed bug where GB wasn't saving associated script files when adding new
    emulators
    - Fixed bug when assigning photos to musicians when a game is selected

  • Man... I know I shouldn't talk, but where did the updates go? :) Anyway, since it seems I'm the only who really gives a rip about this kick ass operating system, an individual who goes by edge has ported over Exult to BeOS.You can nab the BeOS version of it from the great guys over at BeEmulated. Go to that site, there have been a lot of updates to emulators like MAME, ScummVM, and Hatari to name a few. - dhalamar

  • DirectX Vulnerability Found! - The Register is reporting that a 'critical' problem with DIrectX was found and that MS issued a patch to fix the problem. After I installed this, WIN2k crashed and gave me a BSOD :) - atila

  • NEStron v0.6.6b - I'm not familiar with this emulator but NEStron is a NES emulator for Windows based computers. It claims to be pretty fast in comparison to other NES emulators but I haven't tried it out. This version fixes a controller bug in WindowsXP - Griking

  • Bad News? - On a sad note that seems to repeat itself way too often recently The Eidolon's Inn has lost its host and will be shutting down at the end of the month unless it can find an affordable new host and funds to keep it up.   • Cxbx v0.7.7 - Cxbx, the new Xbox emulator has been updated with a new release and screenshots. Changes are;

    • Stella and a few other homebrew games are now playable :] This means you can play all your atari games on Cxbx, which is a great novelty.
      Finally low level emulation of the heap, which is a very very nice thing and fixed some glitches/bugs.

  • VisualBoy Advance v1.6b2 - the Gameboy Advance emulator VisualBoy Advance has seen an update today. Since this release is a beta there is no documentation included with the binary but the emulator homepage lists the following as changes in this release.
    • Rewind is only enabled in the menu if there is a rewind position
    • Rewind history is discard if a rom is loaded or a save state is loaded
    • Warning message added when playing movies about losing previous saves
    • Rewind can be disabled by setting interval to 0 for slower machines
    • Sound problems loading old save states should be gone (note that version beta 1 save states will have the problem though)
    • Accelerators are now correctly saved to the INI

  • Little John GP32 0.2 - YoYoFR released a new version of his superb NES emulator for GP32! This release is reason enough for anyone wanting a portable NES to buy a GP32, as it runs 60fps without sound, about 30fps with sound, and also has a very full feature set. It's still a bit buggy though, add your feedback on the GP32emu board, you'll find an ongoing thread there where you can address the author. - prophet

  • Cxbx v0.7.6 - There's been another Cxbx release today. Cxbx is a work in progress Xbox emulator. The internals have changed very significantly in this version, so some apps (especially homebrew emulators) are starting to run. PointSprites now runs correctly, and is a very impressive demo.     • Many more homebrew apps show some graphics
    • DirectInput bugs fixed
    • PointSprites works great without source hack
    • Lots of code cleanup

  • GP32 Update - A new Colecovision emulator, GPColEm v0.1, was released by Consolius! This release doesn't have sound or alphabetical game sorting yet, but all that's planned for the next version. Download it from GP32emu. Also in the news are two WIP emulators. First we have Little John, YoYoFR's NES emulator - new screenshots were released showing off all sorts of great features, from screen scaling to sprite capacity doubling. Next, we have fSMS32, Rlyeh's brand new Sega Master System (and Game Gear??) emulator - which reportedly runs 60fps with crystal clear sound, save states and an advanced file selection system. You can see photos at GP32emu & GP32Xtreme. UPDATE - GP32emu just posted a new test build of GPvGB (Gameboy Color emu) which is very fast (too fast!) and solves the crash bug! - prophet

  • Atari 2600 RPG Project - The Atari 2600 RPG Project is a so far unnamed new homebrew RPG for the Atari 2600. Some of the planned features of this new game are;
    • Large world, comparable in size to early Ultima series
    • Save your place using a code system
    • A large amount of text to give the game a real story
    • Entirely turn-based
    • Standard RPG staples: magic, weapons, HP, the inn, etc.
    • Fight enemies from other Atari 2600 games

    I'm not sure how long it's been available but there's now a demo of this project available for download that can be run on your favorite Atari 2600 emulator.

  • KiGB V1.45 - KiGB, the multi-platform Gameboy emulator has been updated today. Changes are;

    • In previous versions, even GB mode was off, KiGB would still force to GB mode when KiGB detected the game was not for GBC. In v1.45, KiGB will no longer force the mode switch. This is useful for running demos that have corrupted GBC flag in the ROM header. (Invasion DX (BUNG) (PD) [C] and Joshua Wise's Demo (Quang2000) (PD) [C]).
    • Bugs Fixed:
    • No borders were displayed when choosing the preference "GBC with SGB borders" on some SGB-supported games. Fixed.

    • SGB mode was not reconized for It's a World Rally. Fixed.
    • Fixed the hung bug for Joust & Defender (U) [C][t1].
    • Fixed the scrolling bug for Jetsons.
    • Fixed a hung bug for Konami Collection 1 after pressing Start in the the option screen.

    • Lowered the output volume on the FDS sound chip.
